The World Blind Union comes together as a world body once each four years. Its General Assembly serves as the ultimate decision making body of the organisation and as a forum for consideration of issues that are central to the lives of blind people throughout the world. 850 delegates and observers came to Melbourne.

The Fifth General Assembly, with the theme "Changing what it means to be blind" was held from Monday 20 to Friday 24 November 2000, in Melbourne, Australia.

THE WBU PROGRAM TAKES SHAPE

The WBU Event, comprised three major conferences, an extensive exhibition of technology and services and many supporting activities.

We accepted the challenge to ensure that this event is available to as many blind people as possible throughout the world.

• Within Australia extensive use was made of the Radio for the Print Handicapped network as well as a local "Special Events Radio Service".
• "Radio Reading Services" and community broadcasters in several countries broadcasting aspects of the event.
• We also provided Internet access to the event in four languages for access by blind people around the world.
